Don Knotts Statue Unveiled in West Virginia
A tribute to the beloved actor and comedian
Morgantown, WV - July 23, 2016
The long-awaited statue of iconic actor and comedian Don Knotts was unveiled to the public today in Morgantown, West Virginia. The statue, which depicts Knotts holding his service cap worn for his role as Sheriff Barney Fife in "The Andy Griffith Show," was sculpted by well-known Morgantown artist and sculptor Jamie Lester.
The statue is the result of about 10 years of work by Lester and a group of dedicated volunteers. It was funded by private donations and grants from local businesses and organizations.
Knotts, who died in 2006 at the age of 81, was born in Morgantown and grew up in the nearby town of Fairmont. He began his career as a nightclub comedian in the 1950s and went on to star in numerous television and film roles, including "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Incredible Mr. Limpet," and "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken."
The statue is located in front of the Morgantown Public Library, where it will serve as a permanent reminder of Knotts' legacy and his deep ties to his hometown.
